LANGTANG TREK

Langtang is a narrow valley situated 75 km north of Kathmandu close to the Tibetan border.
The road head at Dhunche is a seven to ten hour bus ride from Kathmandu. Just a couple of days walking finds you amongst beautiful snow peaks of the Ganesh and Langtang ranges. Following the Langtang Khola (river) will take you to the settlement of Kyanjin Gompa at 3900m. This is the furthest place to find lodges up the valley. The Langtang Valley was designated the first National Park of Nepal in 1971. Most of the people in the region are Tamang whose culture, religion and language are very similar to that of Tibet. Beautiful landscapes and pretty villages make this a relatively easy and therefore popular trekking destination. After retracing our steps to the village of Syabru we crossed the Laurabina La, a pass at 4610m, into the Helambu district. The crossing of the pass in a freezing wind and thin air was nothing compared to the descent in waist deep sluggish snow and losing our way on the Helambu side.

Who says this trek is easy?!
Helambu lies just to the north of Kathmandu at elevations averaging 2000m. The people of the Helambu call themselves Sherpas although their culture and traditions are rather different from the Khumbu Sherpas near Mount Everest. The Helambu circuit is an easy week long trek starting only an hour by taxi or bus from Kathmandu. Most famed are the beautiful terraced landscapes and the pretty villages of the region. Most trekkers return to Kathmandu via the Helambu after crossing the pass from Langtang.

In the upper part of valley there are snow bridges spanning angry torrents, high passes enveloped in mist, tiny lakes with icebergs floating on them and water of crystalline brightness. There are also high mountains of solid ice.

Langtang Helambu Trekking

This trek provides an opportunity to see the nearly whole Nepalese Himalayan mountain range from Annapurna in the west, to Makalu in the east. On the morning of the second day, this amazing view can be seen for the first time from the top of the Shiva Puri Ridge.
The trek continues along a high ridge for 6 days until it crosses the Laurebina Pass. Just below the pass lies the Gosainkund Lakes at 4,300 metres. The Gosainkund lakes are the object of the Shiva pilgrim trail for they were once visited by Shiva himself. From here, the path descends to Syabru, an interesting village on the crest of a ridge.
The trek now enters the Langtang valley. The Langtang valley is sacred and no animals may be killed here. It is also a national park. The forest is full of wildlife.
Higher up, past the tree line, lies Kanjin Gompa, an architectural master piece. Its sloping walls complement the slopes of the mountain behind, Langtang Lirung.
The Langtang valley continues west and then north for another 50 kilometres beyond Kanjin Gompa. This is beyond the range of tea house trekking, for there are no lodges. This region was visited in the 1950s by TW Tilman, who found rumours of Yetis amongst the local herdmen. Today, the upper Langtang region is visited mainly by expeditions to Dorje Lakpa and Shishi Pangma.
Finally the trek returns down the valley to Syabru Bensi from where the bus can be caught to Kathmandu.
