Lower Dolpo Trek

Maximum Elevation: 5190meters
Duration of Trek: 18 days

Lower Dolpo is the least strenuous trek of the two Dolpo treks on this web site (see upper Dolpo trek in restricted regions) nevertheless it is not an easy trek. One of the many highlights of the lower trek is the flat upper valley which contains a number of interesting villages which are mostly inhabited by people of Magar & Gurung origin. There are number of Buddhist and Bon temples to be experienced along the way. This 14 day itinerary allows a more leisurely pace and provides insurance against bad weather.

Upper Dolpo Trekking

Maximum Altitude : 5190 meters
Duration of Trek : 26 days camping

The upper region is restricted and requires a permit. It is rich and diverse area lying west of the Kali Gandaki Valley just behind the Dhaulagiri massif in mid-western Nepal.

Upper Dolpo:
A journey of two halves, the trek is a difficult one with the high pass at Jhangla to negotiate, quite a few days are taken up hiking through lower-elevation forests with panoramic mountain views before entering into some spectacular high mountain scenery. The Inhabitants of Dolpo are of Tibetan stock most continue to live, cultivate and trade the way they have always done, they are skilled traders who often traverse the Tibetan Plateau with their Yak caravans. The itinerary includes rest and acclimatisation days and enough time for good exploration of the area. There are people who travel to Nepal, sometimes every year, just to return to this region. For them Dolpo is Nepal and Kathmandu something they must negotiate on the way. They speak of wonderful scenery and amazing trekking in an extremely rich and different landscape.
